KOTA KINABALU: The level of occupancy in hotels rated four-star and below in the East Coast of Sabah is currently at a discouraging 40 per cent.

President of the Sabah Hotel Association, Christopher Chan disclosed that the figure proves to be a low number compared to the normal 60 to 70 per cent level of occupancy.

"Yes, the kidnapping incidents in the East Coast of Sabah have definitely affected the business of our member hotels in the area," said Chan when met after chairing the association's 'buka puasa' charity dinner for the children of Cheshire Home and Seri Mengasih Centre at Kinabalu Daya Hotel here yesterday.

"It not only affects arrivals and checking in of tourists but also those who are business travellers, as well as government events," he said.

Chan said that it was a bad blow for business and economic activities in the East Coast area.

"It (kidnapping incidents) brought multiple effects to the economy in the area which affects the livelihood of the communities there also.

"When no visitors come, it is not only the hotels' business that is affected but also the other enterprises, small and medium.

"With the drop in number of visitors, it's a direct spin-off for the economic activities there," said Chan.

SIBU: Hoteliers here are heaving a sigh of relief that the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) may soon be inspecting room-for-rent premises that have mushroomed here in recent times.

Sarawak Central Region Hotel Association chairman Johnny Wong Sie Lee said during the association's annual dinner on Saturday that he was concerned about the non-compliance with fire safety by these operators.

"Many budget hotels have been badly hit because these (room-for-rent) operators need not pay income tax, government service tax and, worse still, they don't comply with Bomba's requirements."

Bomba (Sibu Zone) chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid, who was also present, suggested the association write to the department and indicate the whereabouts of all these premises.

"In the interest of public safety, we can instruct our enforcement officers to inspect room-for-rent premises to determine their fire safety standard," he said.

"But we can only advise the owners on safety matters, such as installing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers."

Abdul Mutalib said a specific law was needed to initiate legal actions.

"Room-for-rent is not included in the Uniform Building By-Law or the Sarawak Building Ordinance.

"So, we can only advise on safety matters."

Wong bemoaned that hotel owners in major towns and cities across the state were besieged by this thorny problem.

He claimed many shop lots were renovated and converted into room-for-rent premises.

According to Wong, repeated calls had been made to Sibu Muncipal Council (SMC) on this matter but not much had been done by the council.

"We even wrote to the council last year calling for a dialogue session, but we have yet to get a reply."

Meanwhile, Wong was re-elected chairman for the 2014/2015 term.

He urged the new committee to recruit hotels and inns that have yet to join the association.

Currently, its 60 members were from Kapit, Kanowit, Mukah, Sarikei and here.

KUCHING: The joint launch of Boulevard Group of Companies'four new establishments – Imperial Hotel Kuching, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Lexus Kuching and Toyota 3S Centre – will strengthen the group's presence in Kuching.

During the opening ceremony, Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive chairman, James Ling Lu Kiong affirmed that the launch of its new four-star hotel targeted at business travellers was timely as Sarawak celebrates Visit Sarawak Year 2014 and Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The hotel's strategic location between the airport and the central business district (CBD) will certainly be an advantage to both business and leisure travellers, he added.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching also has much to offer in the form of meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (MICE) facilities," he said during the launching ceremony yesterday.

The event was graced by the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Adenan Satem and his wife as well as Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu Numpang.

Also present were Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive director Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho, Boulevard Jaya Sdn Bhd general manager Heu Nging Ching, Boulevard Group of Companies directors Tan Sri Lau Hieng Wui and Dato' Sri Law Kiu Kiong, UMW Toyota president Datuk Ismet Suki and other honoured guests.

"Kuching has really been transformed into a well-known MICE destination when our state government under the vision of our former Chief Minister, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud spearheaded the set up and established the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) in 2006 and the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in 2009 to tap into this vast potential MICE market," he highlighted.

The number of international conferences and conventions held in Kuching over the last few years, the latest being the Asean Tourism Forum 2014 in January and Routes Asia 2014 in March earlier this year were testimony to the enormous success of our state government's vision and efforts.

Imperial Hotel Kuching aims to tap into this market by offering comprehensive MICE facilities including two ballrooms, nine multi-functional meeting rooms, extensive pre function foyer, VIP lounges and a covered outdoor terrace to suit conferences and events of different sizes and preferences.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching's extensive conference and meeting facilities with a total floor area of 5,856 square metres equipped with the latest technological audio video equipment will most definitely support the state government's objective to make the city of Kuching and Sarawak the destination of choice not only for tourism but also for international conventions and events," James affirmed.

In addition, Ling acknowledged that the evolution of today's business world has created the need for a high level of technological solutions and supports to both business and leisure travellers on the go.

On that note, Imperial Hotel Kuching takes great pride at being the first hotel in Sarawak to subscribe to the Hospitality Entertainment Solution, the latest hassle free offering from Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) with the latest ICT and entertainment package comprising of In-Building Broadband Solution (IBS), TM's IPTV service – Hypp TV and powered by TM's high speed broadband (HSBB) network connectivity.

"It is an honour for our hotel to work in partnership with Telekom Malaysia, the largest integrated solutions provider in Malaysia to extend our discerning guests with good WIFI connectivity, be it for entertainment or work related, a weather proof uninterrupted access of internet and good quality HyppTV entertainment and news channels," he said.

Looking at Boulevard Shopping Mall's expansion, James observed that retail offerings have expanded to more than 230 offerings with a good mix.

"Furthermore, three floors of link corridor are connected with this addition to the Phase 1 Mall to give shoppers a more comforting and convenient accessibility.

"After this extra phase of addition, the mall has finally being transformed and fully completed making it the largest on stop lifestyle mall in Sarawak with 1.7 million square foot of retail space," he added.

In a press conference with the media, Imperial Hotel Kuching general manager Patrick Kuek mentioned that the weather-proof channels are one of two reasons which motivated them to enter into a partnership with TM.

It also addresses the need for WiFi services which Kuek pointed out was a key criteria of late when business and leisure travellers search for hotels.

"Over the years, I think most hotels, especially international name brand hotels, realised that WiFi has become a necessity, rather than a luxury item. This is why more international hotels are providing WiFi (services) on a complimentary basis," he observed.

Commenting on the new partnership, TM Sarawak state general manager, Sarbini Hamdan TM hopes that the other hotels under Imperial Group, particularly in Sarawak, will follow suit.

On the background of the Hospitality Entertainment Solution, Sarbini noted this solution was launched sometime in June last year, and TM only started aggressively promoting this service in August 2013.

To date, TM has already secured commitments from 32 hotels around the country.

"We are completely open to any of our consumers or hoteliers, resort owners or developers out there who want to work with us to subscribe to this service. Currently, Imperial Hotel (Kuching) is the first hotel that signed up," Sarbini said, adding that there is also another group of hotels (Everly Group of Hotels), that has signed up just recently.

Sarbini noted that the collaboration established with Imperial Hotel Kuching reflects their commitment in preparing Malaysian small medium enterprises (SMEs) for a paradigm shift, especially those in the hospitality industry.

"This all-in-one solution not only elevates the hotel guests' experience but most importantly, ease the hotel's technical management concerns as the solution provides High Speed Broadband Interent access via TM's DOME netowrk, world-class entertainment via HyppTV, as well as a 24/7 Call Centre and Customer support."

The MOU signing ceremony yesterday saw Khaidhir Elias, vice president SME of TM and Sarbini signing the Service Agreement on behalf of TM while Imperial Hotel was represented by Don Yew Hoon, chief executive officer of Boulevard Group of Companies and Kuek.

Also present at the ceremony were Su, Sharon Lau, financial controller of Imperial Hotel Kuching, Azman Yusof, general manager of SME, TM and Roslawati Mohd Tahir, head of SME, TM Sarawak.

KUCHING, 20 June 2014: World Cup fever is not deterring music fans from turning up for the 17th Rainforest World Musical Festival that officially opened Thursday evening with a welcome beach party at Damai Beach Resort, a 40-minute drive from Kuching City.

Commenting on a potential audience conflict with the World Cup, Sarawak Tourism Board's chief executive officer, Datuk Rashid Khan said: "We went through this issue four years ago and there was no visible impact on attendance."

He estimated attendance would be on par with last year at around 23,000, based on advance ticket sales.

"Online sales are on target," he added, "About 40% of ticket sales are driven by travel agents in Brunei, West Malaysia and Singapore who are authorised to issue festival ticket and direct online sales are handled by Ticketpro."

"We are estimating a similar attendance as last year," he added, noting ticket sales make up about a third of the Rm3 million allocated budget to run the event.

"A third of the revenue comes from ticket sales, a third from sponsors and commercial rights and the balance from government grants."

Tickets sold online cost Rm100, but increased on the eve of the festival to Rm130 a night or Rm340 for all three days.

The music festival gets underway Friday at the nearby Sarawak Cultural Village with music workshops and afternoon band concerts leading up to the main performances on two stages from sunset to midnight, 20 to 22 June.

Event organiser, Sarawak Tourism Board, confirmed 23 bands would perform this year; 16 international bands and seven local bands with 190 musicians.

Over the three days, an estimated 23,000 music fans will listen to performances from bands, from ASEAN, Latin America, Europe and Australia. Around 70% of festival visitors come from outside of Sarawak state.

Organised to raise the profile of the state's tourism, the festival attracts visitors from neighbouring Brunei, west Malaysia, Sabah, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia as well as Australia and Europe.

This year's event was moved forward from mid-July to June to avoid Ramadan that will start less than a week after the festival closes.

Next year's festival will be hosted 7 to 9 August.

Since 2013 the festival has followed a music expo held at the Hilton Hotel in Kuching city where bands network and audition for 20 programmers who organise music festivals worldwide.

This year, RWMF has added a third stage where two bands, each day, will perform chamber-style concerts in the afternoons. Their performances will be held concurrently with 27 music workshops hosted in the various longhouses that make up the cultural village.

The festival has also introduced for the first time a "Drum Circle" that features daily interactive sessions with musicians in a "musical game of drums".

Sarawak Tourism Board believes the event supports the local economy to a tune of RM 37 million in spin-off revenue.

Just ahead of the festival's opening, musicians and media joined STB officials to plant 200 mangrove trees in in an area that was once on the banks of the Kuching River until the river was diverted to prevent flooding in the city.

A major "plant a tree project' is underway to improve the area's environment that coincides with the music festival's objective to reduce its carbon footprint.

DBNA to build 6-storey RM13 mln hotel - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 11:32 AM PDT

by Wilfred Pilo reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on June 8, 2014, Sunday

KUCHING :The Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) will build a six-storey RM13 million hotel in the vicinity of its headquarters.

DBNA chief advisor Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong said the community-based project will involve 60 rooms with a bed and breakfast (B&B) concept.

"We are going to the federal and state government to help us in making the project viable and if the funds are available then the project can start in 2015," he told reporters after officiating at DBNA's seventh triennial general assembly (TGA) yesterday.

"But since it is a community-based project, we need all of the Bidayuh community to contribute."

The Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication said the response from Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on the project has been very positive.

"For the state, we have to come up with a definite plan and then the Bidayuh community have to start contributing to start the project," he said.

In his speech, he called on the 200,000-strong Bidayuh community to work hard to emulate other successful communities such as the Chinese.

"If you perform better and work harder than other races, people of other races will respect you and you can be proud and superior. But don't be arrogant when you are successful," he said.

"If we can be a race which perseveres under any circumstance, then we are one step ahead. And if we can continue to emulate that, we will be a successful community in the country and help to contribute in developing this country."

Manyin said he is happy to see that many young Bidayuhs are keen to be successful and want to contribute to the community.

He added that there will be a reference book on the Bidayuh community published next year.

"The book is about what the Bidayuh have done in the past, the present and what they want in the future," he said.

He pledged RM30,000 to DBNA and also launched the association's new website.

Manyin also called on all Bidayuhs to congratulate Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) CEO Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot for being the first from the community to receive the title 'Tan Sri'.

Baya, who is former State Secretary, received the Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) award from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah in conjunction with the King's birthday yesterday.

Meanwhile, Datu Ik Pahon, who retained the post of DBNA president for another term, reminded young Bidayuhs to give back to society.

He urged them to appreciate what their leaders, including Manyin, had done for the community.

"With his (Manyin) leadership, DBNA headquarters has now new buildings in terms of the new hall and the Baruk. Without his personal effort we would still be lagging behind," said the Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary.

Ik said Manyin has also helped the community document its land under Section 18.

Out of the 338 Bidayuh villages in Sarawak, he said 68 had completed their land documentation.

"Recently we submitted 50 for documentation, and to date two had been approved while five have been promised by the state government," he said, adding that all Bidayuh villages would hopefully have land documents in the next 10 years.
