Woman found dead in <b>hotel</b> - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 20 Dec 2015 09:24 AM PST KUCHING: A woman, believed to be 32 years old, was found dead in a hotel at a plaza here on Saturday. Kuching District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the identity of the victim would be disclosed only after the post-mortem was done. Speaking to reporters at the scene, he said the victim, from Sibu, had checked into the hotel for day use and was expected to check out by noon. When she did not check out, a hotel staff went to her room at about 5pm and found her lying lifeless on the floor next to the bed, he said. "There was no sign of a struggle, so we believe the cause of death could be health related. However, we cannot be certain until a post mortem is done." Based on CCTV footage, he said the victim checked into the hotel alone. The case is classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The new hotel will be known as Fairfield by Marriott, a three-star international business hotel, and it is expected to be completed and operational by the first quarter of 2017. It will also be part of Naim's upcoming Bintulu Paragon which is expected to be the largest contemporary development in Bintulu. "We believe the collaboration between Naim and Marriott will add value to the tourism industry in Bintulu by providing better services to all travelers," said chief operation officer, Lau Keat Hoo, in his speech during the signing of the MoU at Naim Sales Gallery, Kuching, yesterday. "We are confident the hotel will be successful under the management of Marriott. We also believe that with the presence of Marriott in our environment, it will enhance the values to our property investors as well," he added. "Upon completion, Bintulu Paragon will be a self-contained hub replete with residential, commercial, retail, and of course, Fairfield Marriott. "Our guests will be able to enjoy our top notch facilities and services all under one roof. Fairfield by Marriott will be the first hotel in Bintulu managed by an international hotel chain," Lau said. Also present at the signing of MoU ceremony to represent Marriott was country representative, Andree Susilo. "We are very fortunate to sign this MoU with Naim, which is one of the leading developers in Sarawak and has also won many prestigious awards," Susilo said in his speech. He added, "Malaysia has been and continues to be a very important market for the Marriott. We believe that our company's international reputation and strength in Malaysia will boost this development (Bintulu Paragon) in Bintulu." Marriott was founded in 1927 and has more than 4,100 lodging properties in 79 countries and territories. Currently, there are eight hotels in Malaysia under the management of Marriott, with 13 more underway. Marriott has a total of 3,171 rooms and Fairfield by Marriott in Bintulu will add another 238 rooms to its existing list in year 2017. <b>Hotel</b>, restaurant operators reminded to display service charge notice Posted: 16 Dec 2015 09:05 AM PST December 17, 2015, Thursday LANGKAWI: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) will continue to check hotel and restaurant operators that impose service charge but did not display notice on the matter. Kedah KPDNKK Anti-Profiteering Unit head, Ariffin Muslim yesterday said partie s convicted of not displaying such notices could be fined of up to RM500,000 for the companies or RM100,000 for individual owners. "Yesterday, we compounded two premises in Kuah (Langkawi) which imposed service charge and did not display notices to inform their customers," he said. MIDF Research neutral on Sime Darby <b>hotel</b> move – BorneoPost <b>...</b> Posted: 07 Dec 2015 03:25 PM PST KUCHING: MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research) is neutral on Sime Darby Bhd (Sime Darby) attempting to dispose Hotel Equatorial Melaka for an estimated RM180 million. Reports state that Sime Darby's property division Acting Managing Director Datuk Jauhari Hamidi saying that "Sime Darby Property is open to business opportunities, including divestments that capture the desired value of its portfolio. "However, to date, we have not officially concluded any transaction on Hotel Equatorial Melaka." To note, Hotel Equatorial Melaka is a 5-star 22-storey international business hotel located at Bandar Hilir, Melaka. Sime Darby acquired the asset in 1998 and the hotel is now 17 years old. As of end of financial year 2015 (FY15), the hotel net book value is RM81.4 million. MIDF Research gathered that Sime Darby has an effective stake of 55 per cent in Equatorial Melaka. "We are neutral at this juncture pending the materialization of the deal. Impact on Sime Darby's balance sheet is also minimal even if the deal materialised. "Assuming the RM180 million price mentioned in the news, Sime Darby's net gearing should be reduced to 0.50 times ,from 0.51 per cent as of end September 2015. "As the news has yet to materialise, we maintain our FY16 and FY17 core net income at RM2.14 billion and RM2.22 billion respectively. Our target price of RM8.20 is based on Sum-Of-Parts valuation. We expect the news to have minimal impact on Sime Darby's share price. "Excluding the news, weak earnings from industrial division should keep Sime Darby's share price upside limited. However, the downside is limited as well due to decent dividend yield of 2.9 per cent and the near term dividend of 19 sen."

Waterfront <b>Hotel</b> to add new dimension to <b>hotel</b> industry <b>...</b> Posted: 08 Dec 2015 02:54 PM PST KUCHING: The upcoming Waterfront Hotel will add a new dimension to Kuching's hospitality industry with its 'artrageous' and luxury boutique hotel concept — a  business model which is growing popular in the city. "Our intent here is to deliver a five star hotel to the market," said Dato Steve Ng, managing director of The Waterfront Hotel. "There has been many three star hotels, two star hotels in the market that's been built but very few five star properties." Ng, who is also the managing director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd, shared with The Borneo Post that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (Motac), which has seen the property, believes that The Waterfront Hotel can qualify for the five star rating. The hotel features a combination of old world charm while also offering guests a contemporary finish and a unique luxury experience. Entrance to the property is through the historic Old Courthouse complex built in 1874. The signature theme of the hotel will be art. Starting from the lower lobby through to the upper lobby and beyond to all the various room floors, many pieces of exceptional art by local artists will be integrated into the design of the hotel. Additionally, the art will not be static as noted artists will from time to time display their creations in the hotel. The hotel also purchases select pieces from the artists for the hotels private collection which are displayed in the premises. On the targeted occupancy rate, the managing director said they are targeting 60 per cent, which is the market norm currently. "Cost wise, the property has cost us a lot more than our original budget, we've had lots of financial challenges," Ng said. "But, our board of directors has been very supportive and we are very fortunate to be here where the hotel is about to open." He added that they are thankful for all the support from the board, shareholders and banks. The Waterfront Hotel is also the beneficiary of the Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta (UKAS) grant from the federal government. Situated below the hotel is the well established fully integrated Plaza Merdeka shopping centre which is accessible from both lower and upper lobbies via a dedicated escalator. Hotel guests using the sky bridge which crosses the five storey atrium will be able to see the shopping centre in its entirety. The shopping centre boasts a wide variety of shops including Parkson's flagship department store, a gourmet supermarket, a two-storey Esprit store, H&M, a two storey Cotton On store, McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King, KFC, to name a few. The combination of the location, the surrounding historic and commercial district as well as the 550,000 square feet (sf) shopping centre will enhance The Waterfront Hotel as the first choice for business and tourist travellers in Kuching. While at the hotel, guests will be treated to a panoramic view of Kuching's bustling commercial district, the Sarawak River, the stately DUN buildings and The Astana to the north and the Merdeka Padang, the historic Sarawak Museum, Kuching Mosque and panoramic views of the city to the south. Guests will also be spoilt for choice of rooms and suites from loft suites (two-storey suites), executive suites and junior suite rooms in contemporary configurations and finishes. There are a total of 208 rooms, 46 of which are suites. The hotel features a sizeable ballroom (with a capacity of 600 pax, seated) and six mid-sized meeting rooms. Automatic weapons fire could be heard from outside the 190-room hotel, where security forces have set up a security cordon. "It's all happening on the seventh floor, jihadists are firing in the corridor," a security source told AFP. The shooting follows a nearly 24-hour siege and hostage-taking at another hotel in August in the central Malian town of Sevare. Four soldiers, five UN workers and four attackers were killed. Islamist groups have continued to wage attacks in Mali despite a June peace deal between former Tuareg rebels in the north of the country and rival pro-government armed groups. Northern Mali fell in March-April 2012 to Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist groups long concentrated in the area before being ousted by an ongoing French-led military operation launched in January 2013. Despite the peace deal, large swathes of Mali remain beyond the control of government and foreign forces. -AFP

Here lies the worlds largest underground chamber, the Sarawak Chamber, capable of accommodating forty Boeing 747 airplanes. In Mulu, you will also find one of the worlds biggest cave passage, Deer Cave, which can fit five cathedrals the size of Saint Pauls in London. Another key attraction is Clear Water Cave, the longest cave in Southeast Asia. The massive caves here are home to millions of bats and cave swiftlets that swarm out into the jungle in great clouds every evening at dusk!  The outdoorsy type will be pleasantly surprised by some of the best examples of tropical limestone weathering in the world, including enormous razor-sharp pinnacles, deep-cut canyons, appropriately named The Pinnacles. There are tough but rewarding multi-day hikes available from the resort. A guide and porter are recommended  Niah National Park / Taman Negara Niah  Niah National Park the scenery is spectacular and breathtaking . The area is a center of human settlement as early as 40,000 years ago , and has one of the largest cave entrance in the world, the Paleolithic and Neolithic cemeteries and wood carvings, frescoes iron-age . Cave paintings are situated near the house wall paintings that tell a boat trip off the head of life after death , including the remnants of the wreckage "death ships" that are scattered on the floor of the cave - boat-shaped coffins (its contents were transferred to the Sarawak Museum ) . The surrounding area is also decorated by thick forest and is home to many species of plants and wildlife.  Until now , the caves remain as an important place for people from the local community , such as birds' nests and guano collection to be important for their economic resources . Niah Caves is a very pleasant place if you want to stay here a few days, although some of the major attractions are open during the day for visitors. Niah National Park is located in Sungai Niah , about 3 km from the small town of Batu Niah , Miri 110km southwest . The park has a visitor center and a nice stay , and very easy to walk around it in the presence of plankwalk network throughout the park . A pair of good walking shoes and a flashlight are essential items that should be taken  Gunung Gading National Park / Taman Negara Gunung Gading  Gunung Gading is home to the world's largest flower, the rafflesia, which can grow up to one metre in diameter. When in bloom the flower gives off a nasty smell which attracts flies and other insects. The rafflesia has no specific season but the rainy season provides better blooming frequencies. It takes nine months to mature and flowering lasts only 4 or 5 days before dying.  Seeing a blooming rafflesia is certainly the highlight of a trip to Gunung Gading, but the Park and the whole Lundu area are well worth visiting anyway. The rugged mountain peaks that make up the Park provide a scenic backdrop to the nearby town of Lundu, and the nearby beaches at Pandan and Siar. Gunung Gading also has some enjoyable walks and a challenging jungle trek Lampir Hill National Park / Taman Negara Bukit Lampir The Lampir Hill National Park is located along the Miri-Bintulu road, about 30km south of Miri Town. With area about 6,952 hectares, it was gazetted and opened to public on 1975. The park is consists of the central portion of the Lambir Hills, a rugged east-west trending sandstone escarpment with a maximum height of 465 meters, has an outstanding regional and global conservation significance for its extraordinary species-rich forest which is ideal for botanist and researchers throughout the world.  1,050 different species of tree out of 7,000 total species and over 1,000 species of insect life are found within the small sample area of 52ha. The park covered with more than half of the area with rich natural mixed Dipterocarp forest, where huge, tall Dipterocarp trees such as Kapur, Meranti, Kempas and Selangan Batu. Shorter trees like Rhu Bukit, Selunsur Bukit, low shrubs, pitcher plants and orchids are found in the Kerangas forest. Apart from the various tree species, the park is very rich in other plant species such as ferns, gingers, vines, palms, mushrooms, moss and lichen, flowering and fruiting shrub trees, climbers and creepers. The fungi of Lampir hill are numerous and remarkable, this including the phosphorescent (illuminate) species that glows in the dark. Animals like bats, monkeys, pangolins and barking deer are those found as well and more than 150 species of birds have been recorded.  Batang Ai National Park / Taman Negara Batang Ai  Batang Ai National Park is located in the Sri Aman Division of Sarawak, in eastern Malaysia on the island of Borneo. It is located in Lubok Antu, some 250 kilometers east of Kuching. The Park is located at Sarawak about 250km from Kuching City with a covering area of 24,040 hectares of rainforest and the artificial lake. The lake is also the Sarawak's only artificial lake, which stretches up to Skrang, Lemanak, Engkari and Ai Valleys. The artificial lake now acts as a water dam that feed to the Batang Ai Hydro Electric Complex to generate the electricity for Sarawak's use. Batang Ai National Park was gazetted as a protected area in early 1991.  Visitors can take a boat ride upriver from the dam, about an hour's of boat ride to see beautiful lowland mixed dipterocarp forest, with drooping trees overhanging the rivers. The rivers are fast flowing, clear and very refreshing. The water level gets quite low during the dry seasons where visitors normally have to help push their boats upstream. Here, the main mode of communication is river transport.  The park is home to many protected species like the Orang Utan, hornbills and gibbons. Other major attraction upriver is the Iban longhouse. This longhouse gives the authentic atmosphere as most of the longhouse dwellers still practise their traditional lifestyle. The Ibans produce local handicrafts, like their 'Pua Kumbu', rattan backpacks 'selabit', rattan mats and even gourd for collecting water. Please note that, if you are staying in Iban longhouse, you need to be aware of local Iban customs so as not to offend anybody.  Bako National Park / Taman Negara Bako Sarawak's oldest national park was established in 1957, covers a modest 27 sq. km., and is about 37km from Kuching. It's known for its extraordinary natural scenery, habitats, plants and wild life. Its most significant features are secluded coves and rugged rocky headlands with magnificent steep cliffs that overlook the South China Sea. The sea spray, wave action and the wind have also carved out magnificent sea arches and sea stacks at the base of the cliffs, some rearing above the waves like a mighty serpent's head.  The attractive sandstone formations appear pink with iron patterns on the cliff. Further inland, waterfalls tumble down into freshwater pools in a tranquil and idyllic jungle setting. Bako contains an incredible variety of plant species and vegetation types, and this is one of the parks great attractions. At Bako it is possible to see almost every type of vegetation found  Bako is also home to approximately 275 rare proboscis monkeys, found only in Borneo. The best times for seeing wildlife at Bako are just after dawn and just before dusk, when the animals are at their most active. Bako is a fascinating place for bird watching, as over 150 species have been recorded here. Bakos extensive trail system is made up of 16 colour-coded jungle trails which offer a range of walking and hiking options. The fit and adventurous can opt for full- day jungle hikes or overnight camping expeditions, whilst those who prefer to take it easy can opt for a relaxing forest walk.  Kuching Town / Bandar Kuching  Described as one of the most attractive cities in Southeast Asia, Kuching is the State capital. It is a city rich in history, and modern day Kuching is a delightful blend of modern structures and old-world charm. Kuching is divided by the Sarawak River; the south is a commercial residential area, dominated by Chinese, while the north shore is predominantly Malay in character, with old kampong houses lining the river. The two parts of the city are very different in character and even have separate mayors and separate town halls  Kuching means 'cat' in Malay and there are a number of suggestions as to how Sarawak's capital acquired the name. Local legend has it that James Brooke (see section on 'history'), pointing towards the settlement across the river, enquired what it was called. Whoever he asked, mistakenly thought he was pointing at a passing cat. If that seems a little far-fetched, the Sarawak Museum offers a few more plausible alternatives, the most likely of which is that the town may have originally have been known as Cochin – port – a word commonly used across India and Indochina.  Sarawak Cultural Village / Perkampungan Budaya Sarawak  Known as the 'Living Museum', the Cultural Village was set up to preserve and showcase Sarawak's cultural heritage. Located at Pantai Damai, Santubong, just 32km from the state capital, Kuching, it is the perfect place to get introduced to local culture and lifestyle. Sprawled across 17 acres, there are about 150 people living in the village, demonstrating traditional daily activities from Sarawak's diverse tribes like the processing of sago and the making of handicrafts. They wear traditional costumes and also put on dances for visitors.  The village residents provide information on their various traditional cultures and lifestyles. You can see replicas of buildings that represent every major ethnic group in Sarawak; longhouses of the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu, a Melanau tall-house and a Chinese farm house among others. The village also has a theatre, where you can enjoy multicultural dance performances. Besides this, there is a restaurant and handicraft shop. You can even get married at the Sarawak Cultural Village, in traditional Iban, Malay, Bidayuh or Orang Ulu style.  The Iban longhouse has separate rooms placed side by side, all of which open to a long communal hall, used for leisurely activities like wood carving and basket weaving. Guests are often invited to attend nightly ceremonies and drink a potent rice wine, tuak, which the Iban make themselves. Comfortable guesthouses are also available for visitors. Jong's Crocodile Farm / Taman Buaya Jong's  Situated at 18 Miles (29km) Kuching/ Serian Highway, a 20 minute leisure drive from Kuching Town, the capital of Sarawak, Land of Hornbills, boasts one of the largest and the only crocodile breeding farm in the country.  Set amidst the charming backdrop of tall tropical trees, lush vegetation and local fruit trees lies this unique farm with over a thousand crocodiles bred in captivity. The farm provides a perfect sanctuary for the reptiles, saving the species from extinction. There are huge and deep concrete ponds and natural breeding grounds for the crocodiles to mate and multiply. Visitors are able to gaze at the snapping jaws, cold menacing eyes, sharp pointed teeth and powerful lashing tails of the crocs within short distance yet safe because of the metal fence.  Apart from crocodiles there are also numerous rare species of birds and animals found only in the Borneo Island. Visitors can have the enchanting experience of walking freely among the monkeys, leopard-cats, sunbears, bearcats, pheasants, civets, barking deers, sambar deers, turtles, fruit bats, monitor lizards, pythons and even hornbills.  Bungai Beach / Pantai Bungai  Location: Miri, About 1 hour drive from Miri and situated near Kampung Bungai in Bekenu is Bungai Beach. Bungai Beach is popular with beachgoers who appreciate its pristine beach, clear waters, and the beauty of the untouched surroundings. "Pertama ialah iklan yang mengelirukan diikuti caj tidak munasabah, salah kiraan, caj roaming, caj tersembunyi dan Fraud," katanya semasa Sesi Perkongsian Maklumat Industri (KSS) Edisi Keempat bertajuk 'Promosi Tidak Benar' di Hotel Hilton semalam. Tambahnya lagi, isu lain adalah Plan Berlaga-Laga, Terma Tidak Jelas, Produk Tidak Diterima dan Barangan Tidak Boleh Ditukar. "Semua ini kebiasaannya isu yang selalu kita terima dan disebabkan pengguna tidak melihat pada 'term and condition' pada iklan-iklan dan mereka terpengaruh dengan iklan berkenaan. "Selain itu, isu biasa diterima oleh kita adalah penipuan transaksi atas talian, peralatan ICT palsu, harga tidak munasabah, terma kontrak tidak adil, iklan palsu dan sebagainya," jelasnya. Oleh yang demikian beliau menasihati pengguna agar membuat aduan kepada pihak berkaitan seperti KPDNKK kerana pengguna mempunyai hak. "Dalam semua aspek ini pengguna perlu tahu bahawa mereka mempunyai hak iaitu keperluan asas, pendidikan pengguna, membuat pilihan, mendapatkan maklumat, keselamatan produk dan perkhidmatan, menuntut ganti rugi dan hak untuk bersuar," katanya. Forum ini adalah untuk menyampaikan maklumat tentang pendidikan teknikal dan latihan vokasional (TVET) serta kerjaya berasaskan kemahiran kepada golongan belia Sarawak supaya dapat merebut pelu-ang-peluang yang terdapat di Koridor Tenaga Diperbaharui Sarawak (SCORE). Menteri Muda di Pejabat Ketua Menteri (Promosi Pendidikan Teknikal) Datu Len Talif Salleh berkata Forum Belia TEGAS adalah berkonsepkan 'From Youth For Youth and By Youth' yang akan dikendalikan secara santai selain ekspo oleh RECODA, UPTK, TEGAS dan 30 institusi latihan kemahiran Sarawak. "Melalui forum ini, belia akan dapat diupaya-kan menjadi pengubah cara dalam pembangunan Sarawak untuk menjadi sebuah negeri termaju dan berpendapatan tinggi pada 2030," katanya pada sidang media Forum Belia TEGAS di Hotel Pullman di sini, semalam. Here lies the worlds largest underground chamber, the Sarawak Chamber, capable of accommodating forty Boeing 747 airplanes. In Mulu, you will also find one of the worlds biggest cave passage, Deer Cave, which can fit five cathedrals the size of Saint Pauls in London. Another key attraction is Clear Water Cave, the longest cave in Southeast Asia. The massive caves here are home to millions of bats and cave swiftlets that swarm out into the jungle in great clouds every evening at dusk!  The outdoorsy type will be pleasantly surprised by some of the best examples of tropical limestone weathering in the world, including enormous razor-sharp pinnacles, deep-cut canyons, appropriately named The Pinnacles. There are tough but rewarding multi-day hikes available from the resort. A guide and porter are recommended  Niah National Park / Taman Negara Niah  Niah National Park the scenery is spectacular and breathtaking . The area is a center of human settlement as early as 40,000 years ago , and has one of the largest cave entrance in the world, the Paleolithic and Neolithic cemeteries and wood carvings, frescoes iron-age . Cave paintings are situated near the house wall paintings that tell a boat trip off the head of life after death , including the remnants of the wreckage "death ships" that are scattered on the floor of the cave - boat-shaped coffins (its contents were transferred to the Sarawak Museum ) . The surrounding area is also decorated by thick forest and is home to many species of plants and wildlife.  Until now , the caves remain as an important place for people from the local community , such as birds' nests and guano collection to be important for their economic resources . Niah Caves is a very pleasant place if you want to stay here a few days, although some of the major attractions are open during the day for visitors. Niah National Park is located in Sungai Niah , about 3 km from the small town of Batu Niah , Miri 110km southwest . The park has a visitor center and a nice stay , and very easy to walk around it in the presence of plankwalk network throughout the park . A pair of good walking shoes and a flashlight are essential items that should be taken  Gunung Gading National Park / Taman Negara Gunung Gading  Gunung Gading is home to the world's largest flower, the rafflesia, which can grow up to one metre in diameter. When in bloom the flower gives off a nasty smell which attracts flies and other insects. The rafflesia has no specific season but the rainy season provides better blooming frequencies. It takes nine months to mature and flowering lasts only 4 or 5 days before dying.  Seeing a blooming rafflesia is certainly the highlight of a trip to Gunung Gading, but the Park and the whole Lundu area are well worth visiting anyway. The rugged mountain peaks that make up the Park provide a scenic backdrop to the nearby town of Lundu, and the nearby beaches at Pandan and Siar. Gunung Gading also has some enjoyable walks and a challenging jungle trek Lampir Hill National Park / Taman Negara Bukit Lampir The Lampir Hill National Park is located along the Miri-Bintulu road, about 30km south of Miri Town. With area about 6,952 hectares, it was gazetted and opened to public on 1975. The park is consists of the central portion of the Lambir Hills, a rugged east-west trending sandstone escarpment with a maximum height of 465 meters, has an outstanding regional and global conservation significance for its extraordinary species-rich forest which is ideal for botanist and researchers throughout the world.  1,050 different species of tree out of 7,000 total species and over 1,000 species of insect life are found within the small sample area of 52ha. The park covered with more than half of the area with rich natural mixed Dipterocarp forest, where huge, tall Dipterocarp trees such as Kapur, Meranti, Kempas and Selangan Batu. Shorter trees like Rhu Bukit, Selunsur Bukit, low shrubs, pitcher plants and orchids are found in the Kerangas forest. Apart from the various tree species, the park is very rich in other plant species such as ferns, gingers, vines, palms, mushrooms, moss and lichen, flowering and fruiting shrub trees, climbers and creepers. The fungi of Lampir hill are numerous and remarkable, this including the phosphorescent (illuminate) species that glows in the dark. Animals like bats, monkeys, pangolins and barking deer are those found as well and more than 150 species of birds have been recorded.  Batang Ai National Park / Taman Negara Batang Ai  Batang Ai National Park is located in the Sri Aman Division of Sarawak, in eastern Malaysia on the island of Borneo. It is located in Lubok Antu, some 250 kilometers east of Kuching. The Park is located at Sarawak about 250km from Kuching City with a covering area of 24,040 hectares of rainforest and the artificial lake. The lake is also the Sarawak's only artificial lake, which stretches up to Skrang, Lemanak, Engkari and Ai Valleys. The artificial lake now acts as a water dam that feed to the Batang Ai Hydro Electric Complex to generate the electricity for Sarawak's use. Batang Ai National Park was gazetted as a protected area in early 1991.  Visitors can take a boat ride upriver from the dam, about an hour's of boat ride to see beautiful lowland mixed dipterocarp forest, with drooping trees overhanging the rivers. The rivers are fast flowing, clear and very refreshing. The water level gets quite low during the dry seasons where visitors normally have to help push their boats upstream. Here, the main mode of communication is river transport.  The park is home to many protected species like the Orang Utan, hornbills and gibbons. Other major attraction upriver is the Iban longhouse. This longhouse gives the authentic atmosphere as most of the longhouse dwellers still practise their traditional lifestyle. The Ibans produce local handicrafts, like their 'Pua Kumbu', rattan backpacks 'selabit', rattan mats and even gourd for collecting water. Please note that, if you are staying in Iban longhouse, you need to be aware of local Iban customs so as not to offend anybody.  Bako National Park / Taman Negara Bako Sarawak's oldest national park was established in 1957, covers a modest 27 sq. km., and is about 37km from Kuching. It's known for its extraordinary natural scenery, habitats, plants and wild life. Its most significant features are secluded coves and rugged rocky headlands with magnificent steep cliffs that overlook the South China Sea. The sea spray, wave action and the wind have also carved out magnificent sea arches and sea stacks at the base of the cliffs, some rearing above the waves like a mighty serpent's head.  The attractive sandstone formations appear pink with iron patterns on the cliff. Further inland, waterfalls tumble down into freshwater pools in a tranquil and idyllic jungle setting. Bako contains an incredible variety of plant species and vegetation types, and this is one of the parks great attractions. At Bako it is possible to see almost every type of vegetation found  Bako is also home to approximately 275 rare proboscis monkeys, found only in Borneo. The best times for seeing wildlife at Bako are just after dawn and just before dusk, when the animals are at their most active. Bako is a fascinating place for bird watching, as over 150 species have been recorded here. Bakos extensive trail system is made up of 16 colour-coded jungle trails which offer a range of walking and hiking options. The fit and adventurous can opt for full- day jungle hikes or overnight camping expeditions, whilst those who prefer to take it easy can opt for a relaxing forest walk.  Kuching Town / Bandar Kuching  Described as one of the most attractive cities in Southeast Asia, Kuching is the State capital. It is a city rich in history, and modern day Kuching is a delightful blend of modern structures and old-world charm. Kuching is divided by the Sarawak River; the south is a commercial residential area, dominated by Chinese, while the north shore is predominantly Malay in character, with old kampong houses lining the river. The two parts of the city are very different in character and even have separate mayors and separate town halls  Kuching means 'cat' in Malay and there are a number of suggestions as to how Sarawak's capital acquired the name. Local legend has it that James Brooke (see section on 'history'), pointing towards the settlement across the river, enquired what it was called. Whoever he asked, mistakenly thought he was pointing at a passing cat. If that seems a little far-fetched, the Sarawak Museum offers a few more plausible alternatives, the most likely of which is that the town may have originally have been known as Cochin – port – a word commonly used across India and Indochina.  Sarawak Cultural Village / Perkampungan Budaya Sarawak  Known as the 'Living Museum', the Cultural Village was set up to preserve and showcase Sarawak's cultural heritage. Located at Pantai Damai, Santubong, just 32km from the state capital, Kuching, it is the perfect place to get introduced to local culture and lifestyle. Sprawled across 17 acres, there are about 150 people living in the village, demonstrating traditional daily activities from Sarawak's diverse tribes like the processing of sago and the making of handicrafts. They wear traditional costumes and also put on dances for visitors.  The village residents provide information on their various traditional cultures and lifestyles. Jong's Crocodile Farm / Taman Buaya Jong's  Situated at 18 Miles (29km) Kuching/ Serian Highway, a 20 minute leisure drive from Kuching Town, the capital of Sarawak, Land of Hornbills, boasts one of the largest and the only crocodile breeding farm in the country.  Set amidst the charming backdrop of tall tropical trees, lush vegetation and local fruit trees lies this unique farm with over a thousand crocodiles bred in captivity. The farm provides a perfect sanctuary for the reptiles, saving the species from extinction. There are huge and deep concrete ponds and natural breeding grounds for the crocodiles to mate and multiply. Mali hunting 3 suspects after <b>hotel</b> attack - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 21 Nov 2015 08:22 AM PST BAMAKO:  At least three people suspected of involvement in a jihadist attack on a luxury hotel in Mali's capital that killed 21 people were being hunted down yesterday, a security source said. "We are actively pursuing three suspects who might have been involved in Friday's attack on the Radisson Blu hotel," the source, who is taking part in the investigation, told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Everything is being done to follow the tracks" of the suspects, the source said, declining to give further details to avoid compromising the investigation. The source added that the hotel "is now totally under control" following the nine-hour attack, which was claimed by Al-Qaeda affiliate the Al-Murabitoun group and ended after Malian and international troops stormed the complex. A police source said Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was expected to visit the site of the attack yesterday. Malian security sources said more than 100 people were taken hostage in the raid while at least three "terrorists" were killed or blew themselves up. Mali yesterday began three days of national mourning and declared a state of emergency after the siege. The attack came as fears are mounting about terrorist threats a week after devastating attacks in Paris that killed 130 people claimed by the Islamic State group, which also said it had downed a Russian passenger jet in Egypt weeks before. The Malian government declared a 10-day nationwide state of emergency from midnight on Friday over the assault and called three days of mourning for the victims, who included three Chinese, an American and a Belgian. Malian security sources said 27 out of more than 100 people taken hostage in the raid had died, while at least three 'terrorists' were killed or blew themselves up. US President Barack Obama yesterday condemned the 'appalling' attack, adding that "this barbarity only stiffens our resolve to meet this challenge" of extremist violence. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei expressed condolences for the victims and their families, adding: "China expresses indignation and strongly condemns this atrocity." UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the "horrific terrorist attack," suggesting the violence was aimed at destroying peace efforts in the country. The assault began around 0700 GMT on Friday, when gunmen pulled up at the hotel at same time as a car with diplomatic plates and starting shooting their way inside, taking guests and staff hostage. Malian television broadcast chaotic scenes from inside the building as police and other security personnel ushered bewildered guests along corridors to safety. Special forces – including Malian, French and two US soldiers who also happened to be in the area – staged a dramatic floor-by-floor rescue, ending the siege after about nine hours. "The hostage-taking is over. We are in the process of securing the hotel," a Malian military source said as civil protection officers removed the victims in orange body bags. – AFP
