The suspect being brought back to the police station.

SIBU: The police here have placed a man under a 3-day remand to facilitate investigation for allegedly cheating a businesswoman.

The accused, 23, was said to have gone to a shop at Mission Road to sell bags at 9am on Thursday.

He allegedly told the woman shopowner that he worked for a hotel, and had smaller denominations of notes to exchange with her.

The owner, 41-year-old Kong, gave RM450 to her teenage son and asked him to follow the man to a budget hotel across the road.

At the hotel, the boy was asked to wait at the lobby while the man went to get the money for change.

The man returned five minutes later and told the boy he had handed over the money to the boy's mother.

The man allegedly left with the RM450.

When the mother realised they had been cheated, she asked around and learned that the man was not a worker of the hotel.

She closed her shop at 2.30pm to look for the man in town but to no avail.

However, as she was about to go home with her husband and son, she saw the man at the hotel and managed to arrest him.

Her husband with the help of some members of the public brought the man to Kong's shop where they handed him over to the police.
