Sarawak Regatta is a popular event in Kuching featuring a race between tradition longboats. These longboats are decorated with colourful designs and are of differing lengths, with some having up to 30 paddlers and others with just a few. The practice dates back to the 1800s and was intended to put as end to the warring of the local tribes.

The Sarawak Museum was built in 1891 and was lengthy to its facility form in 1911. The building was built to at all times in flames and display local indigenous arts and crafts, and collections of local animals. Its founding was encouraged by the prominent British naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, who was subsequently collecting specimens in the make a clean breast.

In 1982 it was converted into a museum exhibition gallery and was officially opened in 1983. The showground floor accommodates the Museum Shoppe and a the stage exhibition hall. Ministry to meet <b>hotel</b>, restaurant owners over charges – BorneoPost <b>...</b>

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) will hold a meeting with hotel associations and restaurant owners this week to discuss matters relating to service charges.

KPDNKK secretary-general Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad said the meeting is necessary as it has led to several problems following the legislation implication in the collective agreement (CA) between employers and employees.

He said surveys conducted by the ministry and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) revealed that consumers rejected 100 per cent of the service charges.

"This issue is not so complicated but it involves the CA and the Industry Act.

"Therefore, we need some time to remove the definition of all service charges imposed in detail," he told a press conference on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation, here yesterday.

The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister, Datuk Seri Hasan Malek on Monday said a committee was set up to study and review the service charges of five to 10 per cent by hotels and restaurants on consumers and said the result is expected to be announced end of this month.

The committee has also met with officials from the hospitality and food and beverage industry to receive feedbacks on the issue, Hasan said.

Alias said while waiting for a decision to be reached, the hotel management and restaurant has been instructed to display a notice explaining the service charges in their premises for the convenience of consumers.

Therefore, a total of 646 checks involving 259 hotels and 387 restaurants had been conducted pertaining to the service charges from April 8 until Monday, he said.

He said 57 notices under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 were issued to seven hotels while 50 hotels were given notices for imposing the service charge without a collective agreement.

Since GST was implemented on April 1 until Monday, Alias said the cumulative total of anti-profiteering related calls received were 4,609 calls and 88,600 premises were checked, Alias said. — Bernama
