Bersih 4 Kuching rally is a go-ahead - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 26 Aug 2015 11:53 PM PDT KUCHING: Kuching's Bersih 4 rally this weekend will be carrying on as planned with the consent of the police. Organising chairman Nicholas Mujah Ason also confirmed during a press conference at Telang Usan that ACP Roslan Bek had assured that personnel will be on hand to ensure the smooth running of the event. "The Sarawak police have shown themselves to be supportive, civilised and responsible. I am very thankful to them," he said. "We are not a mob and we are not troublemakers. We are concerned citizens who feel passionate about the future of our state and our nation," he said. "How else should the police respond but to facilitate us in our freedom of expression? Why should we fear the police in a peaceful place like Sarawak?" Event committee member Ahmad Awang Ali stated, "Bersih T-shirts are sold throughout Malaysia, so come in yellow to show support." There will also be voter registration booths, informational speeches, musical entertainment, film screenings and general fellowship. Spokesperson Karen Shepherd asked anyone coming to Bersih 4 Kuching to preserve the smooth running of the city. Buses will be parked at the Jubilee ground car park while car owners are requested to park at Saujana, Pelita or Top Spot parking. Shepherd also announced there will be marshals available at Godown Theatre, Museum Gardens, Hilton Hotel and Jubilee Ground car parks to direct participants safely towards Song Kheng Hai Ground. Those attending can present themselves at these four places at 2pm this Saturday for safety briefing and advice before moving to the venue. "Unfortunately we must issue some guidelines for arrest. If you are arrested, remain in a large group and take a photo immediately," she said. "Do not raise your hands but put them behind your back instead. If the police ask to search you, ask them to show you their hands before they put them into your pockets." The organisers also mentioned if anybody need help, send a SMS to 014-8796058 or 014-8795608 with name, IC number and the police station they are being apprehended. |
Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites, Kuching | From Emily To You Posted: 30 Aug 2015 09:38 AM PDT From the outside, Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites looks like a City Hall building in an old European city. Merdeka Palace Hotel wins hands down when it comes to location. I love the fact that it faces Padang Merdeka (Merdeka Field) and is just within walking distance from the popular Waterfront strip, Plaza Merdeka shopping mall, many shop houses offering a good range of products and services, as well as historical sites, such as Fort Margherita. Featuring a colonial-style architecture, Merdeka Palace Hotel is located in the historic and cultural centre of old Kuching, and is only approximately 25 mintues' drive from the Kuching International Airport. Incidentally, the airport is suffering from a similar fate as the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh did, where the only international route is Singapore. At least, we now also have flights to Medan, Indonesia. Overall, the hotel, previously known as Aurora Hotel before it was renamed 17 years ago, may be a little dated but the good news is that with their new owners (Felda Investment Corporation Sdn. Bhd.) since June 1, 2015, the hotel is being refurbished in stages. And the management is working on providing complimentary WiFi connectivity, at least in public areas for a start. Merdeka Palace Hotel boasts a number of food and beverage outlets and I would like to write about two of them, where I had the opportunity to dine in during my recent 5-night stay at the hotel. Both have halal status. Ristorante Beccari Ristorante Beccari is believed to be the one and only Italian restaurant attached to a hotel. It is named after Odoardo Beccari, an Italian who arrived in Sarawak on an expedition on June 19, 1865. Now helmed by Chef De Cuisine Gedang Jetom, it is possibly the only Italian restaurant in Kuching that serves wood-fired pizza. Chef Gedang, of Bidayuh descent, has extensive experience working in the kitchens of star-rated hotels. He had been in the opening teams of both Hilton and Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching. He subsequently joined Ristorante Beccari when it was first established, rising from the ranks, having learnt the trade under the tutelage of five Italian chefs. In one of these photos is the wood-fired vegetable pizza. This thin-crust pizza is listed on the menu as Verdure Dell'orto. It consists of zucchini slices, eggplant, roasted sweet capsicum, mushroom, sweet onion and sliced tomato. It is priced at RM36+. The drinks we had were (L-R) Seattle Sunrise (carrot juice, orange juice, vanilla ice cream and milk) at RM11, Luciado de Mango (mango juice, milk, honey and dashes of strawberry syrup) at RM11 and fresh pineapple juice (RM15.50 nett). Seattle Sunrise and Luciado de Mango were ordered from Seattle Coffee & Tea, which is also under the charge of Chef Gedang.
Seattle Coffee & Tea I was informed that Seattle Coffee & Tea was the first franchise coffee outlet in Kuching even before Starbucks arrived. However, it seems that many people have forgotten about it, probably because it is situated within the hotel building and is not distinctive to the public. However, Seattle Coffee & Tea which serves a myriad of freshly brewed coffee and tea blends also offers a good selection of freshly baked cakes, pastries and breads. This is definitely the place to be for a quiet tea break where one could just sit down and enjoy the pungent aroma of coffee. One afternoon, we had Smoked Caprese which is smoked salmon fish fillet with grated mozzarella cheese, tomato and basil leaf (RM18). The drink in the photo is Seattle Sunrise (RM11).

I m Hippo : Citadines Apartment Hotel in Kuching, Sarawak Posted: 09 Jun 2015 11:17 PM PDT During the long weekend in May, I traveled to East Malaysia, Sarawak. Since I am travelling with my parents and elder niece this time, we have booked an apartment hotel which recommended by Kay, a pure Chinese Sarawakian. #lol Plenty restaurants and cafes offering local and international dishes around the corner. Besides all the dining spots, the Spring Shopping Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in East Malaysia is just located across the road which is accessible via the pedestrian bridge. The first impression when entering the lobby is very cozy, and the receptionists are very welcoming and friendly. The hotel provides free WiFi. As said it is an apartment hotel, the unit completes with separate living and dining areas. This is the master bedroom; comes with it's own TV as well as the bathroom. The en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom has a bath with shower over. The second room is very simple, with only 2 single bed, and a closet. The other bathroom which just next to the second bedroom had a walk-in shower. One of the cons we found from the living room was the overall cleanliness. We were lucky enough to get the room with such a nice view like this! The 4 bottles of water plus tea, coffee and creamer were supplied every day. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessities like microwave, fridge, electronic kettles, electric stove and mild cooking utensils, it's good enough for you to make a yummy homemade meal if you want to.
The fitness centre is located at the same floor as we stayed. The outdoor surrounding is big, and it provides one small pool for kids and one big pool for adults. Overall, despite some cons that have mentioned, we are quite happy with the hotel in generally. Alright, that's all for today! |
