Johor to have over 13,000 three-star <b>hotel</b> rooms next year <b>...</b>

Posted: 11 Nov 2014 10:54 PM PST

NUSAJAYA: Johor will have 13,360 three-star hotel rooms next year to meet the needs of the state's growing tourism industry, said State Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman, Datuk Tee Siew Kiong.

"Currently, the state has only 12,500 hotel rooms of three stars and above. The increase in the number of rooms is in line with the construction of many hotels this year and next," he said.

Tee said this in reply to questions by Hamimah Mansor (BN-Penawar) and Dr Zaini Abu Bakar (BN-Nusajaya) at the state Legislative Assembly today.

He said based on Tourism Malaysia survey, the number of tourists who stayed overnight in Johor last year was over five million from 3.95 million in 2012.

Tee said the state government adopted comprehensive measures to encourage the tourists to stay longer in the state.

"The state's Tourism Department, together with the private sector, planned various international-level programmes to encourage them to stay longer in the state," he said.-Bernama

The best hotel in Lawas town
~ Comfortable, clean & new

Hotel Seri Malaysia Lawas is the only hotel you can find in Lawas town through Agoda, I think is also the best hotel in town. We also searching around the town, only few budget type hotel available, no lift provided. Well, this is a nice and quiet hotel, big parking place, big lobby, big restaurant, big room also! Room is clean, comfortable, only the TV is small. The fount counter also very helpful, I booking through Agoda is RM20 cheaper than I walk-in, so I book immediately online and show to counter my booking number. Lawas town is a small town, no place to go during night time, but you still can go to the foods stall next to hotel enjoy your local foods and drink there, otherwise you can get some snack from the shop at hotel lobby and enjoy in your room. Morning breakfast is great, big restaurant with many choice of foods. Although the day we stay, morning only two of us in the restaurant, you still can see many foods were provided, noodle, cake, bread, porridge, fruits and western foods as well.

New <b>hotel</b>, mall extension boosts Boulevard&#39;s presence in <b>Kuching</b> <b>...</b>

KUCHING: The joint launch of Boulevard Group of Companies'four new establishments – Imperial Hotel Kuching, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Lexus Kuching and Toyota 3S Centre – will strengthen the group's presence in Kuching.

During the opening ceremony, Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive chairman, James Ling Lu Kiong affirmed that the launch of its new four-star hotel targeted at business travellers was timely as Sarawak celebrates Visit Sarawak Year 2014 and Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The hotel's strategic location between the airport and the central business district (CBD) will certainly be an advantage to both business and leisure travellers, he added.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching also has much to offer in the form of meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (MICE) facilities," he said during the launching ceremony yesterday.

The event was graced by the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Adenan Satem and his wife as well as Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu Numpang.

Also present were Shin Yang Group of Companies' group executive director Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho, Boulevard Jaya Sdn Bhd general manager Heu Nging Ching, Boulevard Group of Companies directors Tan Sri Lau Hieng Wui and Dato' Sri Law Kiu Kiong, UMW Toyota president Datuk Ismet Suki and other honoured guests.

"Kuching has really been transformed into a well-known MICE destination when our state government under the vision of our former Chief Minister, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud spearheaded the set up and established the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) in 2006 and the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in 2009 to tap into this vast potential MICE market," he highlighted.

The number of international conferences and conventions held in Kuching over the last few years, the latest being the Asean Tourism Forum 2014 in January and Routes Asia 2014 in March earlier this year were testimony to the enormous success of our state government's vision and efforts.

Imperial Hotel Kuching aims to tap into this market by offering comprehensive MICE facilities including two ballrooms, nine multi-functional meeting rooms, extensive pre function foyer, VIP lounges and a covered outdoor terrace to suit conferences and events of different sizes and preferences.

"Imperial Hotel Kuching's extensive conference and meeting facilities with a total floor area of 5,856 square metres equipped with the latest technological audio video equipment will most definitely support the state government's objective to make the city of Kuching and Sarawak the destination of choice not only for tourism but also for international conventions and events," James affirmed.

In addition, Ling acknowledged that the evolution of today's business world has created the need for a high level of technological solutions and supports to both business and leisure travellers on the go.

On that note, Imperial Hotel Kuching takes great pride at being the first hotel in Sarawak to subscribe to the Hospitality Entertainment Solution, the latest hassle free offering from Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) with the latest ICT and entertainment package comprising of In-Building Broadband Solution (IBS), TM's IPTV service – Hypp TV and powered by TM's high speed broadband (HSBB) network connectivity.

"It is an honour for our hotel to work in partnership with Telekom Malaysia, the largest integrated solutions provider in Malaysia to extend our discerning guests with good WIFI connectivity, be it for entertainment or work related, a weather proof uninterrupted access of internet and good quality HyppTV entertainment and news channels," he said.

Looking at Boulevard Shopping Mall's expansion, James observed that retail offerings have expanded to more than 230 offerings with a good mix.

"Furthermore, three floors of link corridor are connected with this addition to the Phase 1 Mall to give shoppers a more comforting and convenient accessibility.

"After this extra phase of addition, the mall has finally being transformed and fully completed making it the largest on stop lifestyle mall in Sarawak with 1.7 million square foot of retail space," he added.

Not bad for where it is
Location, helpful desk staff, clean

Although a bit shabby, the room was clean. The front desk staff spoke very limited English but did their best to help with our requests. The hotel's location, a bit out of the city center but near the market was good. The town is so small that it was still easy to walk everywhere from the hotel.

Transportation, <b>hotel</b> stay, cruises subjected to GST – BorneoPost <b>...</b>

Posted: 01 Oct 2014 03:05 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: The impact of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) on the travel industry would include taxable supplies such as hotel accommodation, domestic transportation/hire of vehicles, inbound tour package and restaurant meals.

It will also include tickets for entry to exhibitions, entertainment venues, spa services, agency commission, booking fees, tour guide services, inbound travel insurance services, visa fees and other related tourism services, all of which will be subject to standard rate of 6 per cent GST.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Malaysia president Hamzah Rahmat disclosed this at the MATTA Malaysia GST seminar.

For land transportation, he said taxi will be exempted, excursion bus for domestic tour, limousine and airport taxi, hire and drive vehicle will all be standard rated supplies. For cruise services, cruises-to-nowhere, cruise around Malaysian waters and cruise around international waters are subject to GST at standard rate.

As tourist destinations, Langkawi, Tioman and Labuan are expected to have a slight advantage under the GST-era compared to other states because these islands are "designated areas" whereby there is generally no GST charged on goods/services such as retail shops, restaurants and hotels located therein, thus giving these islands a small cost-advantage for tourists, he said.

Hamzah urged members to register early and start preparations as non compliance of the GST rules will attract heavy penalties.

Additional manpower requirements are needed to ensure compliance.

As most of the travel agents have an annual turnover above RM500,000, and would become a GST-registered business, he advised travel agencies to put in place procurement policies that are GST-compatible and notify respective vendors/suppliers that GST-registered vendors/suppliers will be preferred in order for the travel agencies to recover Input Tax Credits on the GST incurred on goods and services purchased.

"As responsible corporate citizens, we must ensure our organization, system and processes are well equipped and able to embrace the implementation of GST," he said.

Law student jailed for suicide bid at <b>hotel</b> - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 04 Nov 2014 08:40 AM PST

by Nathaniel Gitom Sario. Posted on November 5, 2014, Wednesday

KOTA KINABALU: A law student who attempted to commit suicide over a RM40,000 debt at a five-star hotel here, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment by the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Sylvester Kuan, 24, pleaded guilty before magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar to committing the offence on October 28 at the 13th floor of Pacific Sutare between 4pm-9pm.

For attempting to commit suicide, a person is liable to an imprisonment term up to year, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, a police report was made at the Tanjung Aru police station by a security personnel of the hotel known as Rizal, informing the police that a man was going to commit suicide.

Rizal had received information from Sylvester's cousin, telling him (Rizal) that the accused was attempting suicide, prompting him to notify the police.

Sylvester had been persuaded to come down from the roof of the hotel at 8.50pm, as he had been standing there since 4pm.

He had checked into the hotel using the name of his cousin's fiance and had said that the reason he wanted to commit suicide was because of personal stress and problems.

Sylvester's counsel, Sairah Haji Yahya from the Legal Aid Bureau told the court during mitigation that her client, an active student from a university in Kuala Terengganu, had a generous heart and did not have a criminal record.

She also said that it was due to his commitments in the university which led to his financial burden.

Sirah further stated that her client was aware of what he had done and regretted his action. He had pleaded guilty, thus saving the time and energy of the court.

A heavy sentence, she said, would affect his future as a lawyer, and as he was still a youth, he deserved a lighter sentence.

However, deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli, who acted for the prosecution, told the court that though Sylvester's offence would have harmed no one but himself, it was still a felony under the Penal Code.

If a light sentence was to be meted by the court, it would send a message to teenagers that if faced with problems, then the shortcut would be suicide.

"Suicide is wrong in the eyes of the law and religion," Ahmad Nazneen said, adding that as Sylvester was a bright student, who in the near future might be facing the judge, the action of suicide contradicted his background as a brilliant student.

There was also the fact that the hotel chosen was a "premium" location, which may suffer damage in name and reputation, while at the same time opening a "Pandora's Box" that would lead outsiders to come to the city to commit suicide.

Sairah further applied for a stay of execution, pending an appeal to the High Court, which was permitted by the magistrate who allowed a bail of RM1,000 under one local surety.
